When Paul Newman and his team won the Rolex Daytona 24-hour endurance race in 1995, he was presented with a Rolex Oyster Daytona watch. Paul Newman has worn the legendary Oyster watch since he started racing in the early 1970s. So it makes sense to reward his achievements with this watch. With his brilliant career as an entertainer and racing car driver, his name has been inextricably linked.
In 1963, the first Oyster Cosmograph Daytona watch came out. Exactly 50 years later, at the 2013 Basel World Watch and Jewelry Fair, Rolex solemnly launched the noble edition of this legendary watch: the Cosmograph Daytona watch made entirely of the supreme rare metal – 950 platinum. The new watch also comes with a maroon cerachrom ring and ice blue surface.
The cerachrom ring is one of the features of the Cosmograph Daytona watch, making it an ideal speedometer, measuring average speeds up to 400 km/h or miles/h. The numerals and scales on the outer ring were filled with a thin layer of platinum via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) plating technology for easy reading.
With a diameter of 40mm and water resistance of 100m (330ft), the Oyster case of the Cosmograph Daytona wristwatch is an example of ruggedness, elegance and perfect proportion. The distinctive middle case is cast from the original block 950 platinum. The triangular pit bottom cover is tightened by the rolex watchmaker with the brand’s own special tools, so that the case is completely sealed. The upper chain crown adopts the patented triple lock triple waterproof system, and the timing button, firmly screw on the case, and is protected by a middle case connected as one of the crown shoulder. The mirror is made of scratch – resistant blue crystal. The fully sealed Oyster case provides the best protection for the highly accurate movement of the Cosmograph Daytona watch.
The Cosmograph Daytona watch adopts the 4130 automatic chain mechanical timing movement completely developed by Rolex, which is equipped with guide wheel. Like all Rolex constant motion movements, the model 4130 movement has been certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Certification, which is awarded to a precision watch successfully tested by the Swiss Chronometer Testing Center (COSC). The exquisite design of this movement and the high quality of the production process make it has unparalleled accuracy and reliability. The heart of the watch, the balance swing component, is made from Rolex’s patented blue PARACHROM wool and an alloy cast exclusively by Rolex. This gossamer is not interfered by magnetic field, it can still perform stably under temperature change, and its seismic strength is up to 10 times that of traditional gossamer.
950 platinum solid link oyster strap with oyster safety clasp to prevent buckle from accidentally opening. Rolex’s patented easy to adjust chain link extension system is also installed on the buckle, making the strap easily extended by about 5 mm, making it more comfortable to wear under all conditions.
